Whilst there’s been many good moments and fun days out in August, for the most part it was led by waves of uncertainty, self-doubt and unwanted recurring thoughts. Just like the seasons, my headspace and mood can fluctuate too; so I’ve been really trying to listen, adapt and redirect my mind where possible. It’s therefore been a month of reflection, baby steps, and getting back into familiar interests.
Days Out & Activities:
- Llanthony Country Show – Our time in Wales was rounded up with a day at the Llanthony show. Celebrating local produce, livestock & pets, food & drink, and handmade crafts – there was plenty to watch and see! This was my second time attending and I don’t imagine it being the last. The atmosphere is full of friendly community spirit; and whether you’re a fell runner, a home baker, or (in this year’s case) a bmx enthusiast, there’s a little bit of something for everyone.
- Krazy Races Soap Box – I’ll be the first to admit my interest in soap box racing is pretty low – it was my partner who first saw the advert for this event – but we found ourselves in the midst of the action one Saturday in the summer. Stockport town centre was bustling with crowds cheering on their favourite teams as they raced down the hill. Food stalls, fairground rides, and a pit stop area called for great entertainment as we celebrated the craftmanship and performance of these karts. A lovely, yet unexpected, day out!
- Theatre Trip – It’s been many months since my last theatre trip, and many more since my last musical theatre one. So when I heard Six the musical was touring at the Lowry Theatre in Salford, I jumped at the chance. I actually went in with very little prior knowledge on the show itself, and left initially thinking ‘what on Earth have I just watched?!’ but as the weeks (yes, literal WEEKS) passed by, I found myself singing the songs as I went about my days – they are super catchy, and very cleverly written! The girls that played the queens, and the band who shared the stage were all so incredibly talented and brought to life a really fun evening of music (accompanied of course by some history lessons!).
- Mini Golf – It’s been a long time too since our last round of mini-golf. But making the most of a free ticket – and being in the vicinity of the Trafford Centre one day anyway – we decided to try out the Paradise Island golf course. Whilst the course itself is pretty basic, the theming and decoration which surrounds it is not. We opted for the Ancient Ruins course which had lovely details of animal figures, plants and buildings along the way. There was even the opportunity to win a free round of golf if you’re successful at hole 19 – but unfortunately we were not! Still a really fun morning activity, despite the fact I didn’t win..
Hobbies and Interests:
- Collecting – I’ve always been a collector at heart, but this month I really buckled down to curate my collections further (mainly in an attempt to not feel so overwhelmed with the number of items I own, but also to focus them somewhat towards specific characters, animals etc only). So whilst I’ve downsized and sold some pieces, I’ve actually added some into the mix too; including that of my grail Disney dolls. - Volunteering – In an attempt to rebuild my retail experience and social skills, I decided this month to begin volunteering for a local charity. I’m really enjoying that feeling of giving something back to your local community, and it’s helped greatly by working alongside some really lovely people too. This is certainly something I’d love to continue for a long while!
